The Xorg.0.log would be interesting to see, however I suspect chances are small that a relevant error message will appear there.
Another debugging technique which might be more fruitful is to use xtrace. Xtrace sits in between the client and X server, and gives you a stream of all the commands going back and forth, so you can see where the communication is failing.
