Think, I know what triggers this behaviour -- see the screen shot.
Scim as default input method for those qt fields seems to lock them -- after switching to other input method things start working as they should.
I have only two "*scim*" packages on my system, which seem to have been installed by default with kubuntu-desktop:
scim-qtimm libscim8c2a
