Epson perfection 1260 scanner support broken in current utopic sane-backends

Bug Description

With the current (on utopic) sane-backends, the Epson perfection 1260 scanner cannot be used.

Invoking xsane causes sane to recognize that the scanner is attached. However when the scanner is selected, sane hangs forever
and cannot even get the scanner configurable parameters to display.

The scanner works fine with the newer sane-backends 1.0.25+git150121 (available in a PPA).

Please, forward port the fix.

With utopic, you need to use the plustek backend.

But the version of that backend in utopic seems problematic.

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases your release is EOL.

If this is reproducible with a supported release of Ubuntu, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with it by running the following from a terminal:
