Bug Description

Most of the Epson scanners nowadays are supported by the epson2 backend :
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html#S-EPSON2

But the needed udev rules and peson2 config file are not present to enable OOTB experience like for HP products.

How to reproduce :
- install ubuntu 14.04
- Plug an epson scanner like the XP-405 ( 0x04b8 0x0898)
- Launch Simple scan : the scanner is not recognized.

WORKAROUND: Add in the /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules file:
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0898", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Add in the /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf file:
usb 04b8 0898
usb /dev/usbscanner0
usb /dev/usb/scanner0

We should enable all those epson models to be plug n play by shipping the needed config files like we do for HP.

Michel-Ekimia, thank you for your report and the work you've done. Please just ignore Christopher and his silly "one-size fits all" requests. Reset to triaged and adding patch keyword.

Michel-Ekimia, it would be really helpful if you were able to confirm that the report you made two years ago (sorry about the delay) still affects zesty and xenial. There are live CD images you can use for this purpose.

Michel-Ekimia / Rolf Leggewie, unfortunately, I wasn't aware that apport doesn't presently work for sane-backends, and I've filed https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/1656599 about it. My bad.

This was reported against a version of Ubuntu that is no longer maintained. Please change status to Triaged if this is still happening in a supported version.
