Bug Description

simple-scan doesn't detect my scanner even if I run it as a root. sane-find-scanner says: "found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung], product=0x341c [Samsung CLX-3160 Series]) at libusb:002:004" and scanimage -L output is "No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). ". My scanner is multifunction device CLX-3160FN and it was working on Ubuntu Natty if I used simple-scan as a root.

can you please run "sudo scanimage -L" from the command line in your current installation?

If you have a chance, can you please test scanning from a live CD for precise and raring to see if it's working there?

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

sudo sane-find-scanner
  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x08ff, product=0x2580 [Fingerprint Sensor]) at libusb:002:003
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

__________

Simpla Scan - No scanners detected (sudo simple-scan - the same).
_________

same results with Quantal.

If you really need your scanner as much as you say you do, I'd kindly suggest to research device support by sane before your next purchase. http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html#Z-SAMSUNG does not list your model even for the developmental branch. A search on google seems to suggest that Samsung might be releasing some funky driver of their own for Linux which might or might not do the trick for you. If I were you, I'd be sure to let Samsung know how disappointed I was as a customer about their lack of support for Linux/Sane and that unless things changed it would affect my future purchases of their products.

Does adding the line "usb 0x04e8 0x341c"to the end of file /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf help? You will have to make that change as root.

Thank you for quick answer and well guidance. Adding "usb 0x04e8 0x341c" to xerox_mfp.conf did the trick for me. The scanner works now perfect and I would suggest you to modify libsane package to fix this problem for others.
Unfortunately samsung's original driver doesn't work on ubuntu any more since 12.10. Of course I've sent them my dissatisfaction and fix request. Thanks again.

I apologize for the long silence. I will soon upload a patched version of the sane backends for precise to my stable PPA

https://launchpad.net/~r0lf/+archive/stable

Please download the sane packages from there and let me know if they fix the issue for you. Furthermore, I need to know if trusty is still affected. Trying out the live CD would be sufficient. Thanks.

Precise doesn't work with ppa:r0lf/stable (livecd altought - maby adding to lp and scanner group could help)
I've checked trusty daily (sane 1.0.23-3ubuntu3) - still can not detect scanner.
I've tried ppa:glaubitz/misc (sane 1.0.24-12 ) - works perfect with trusty
and ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git (sane 1.0.25-git20140331-trusty0) - also works perfect withtrusty.
Will it help?

Rolf Leggewie (r0lf) wrote :

Seems like indeed support for that scanner only made it into the 1.0.24 release which did not make it in time for trusty.

If you are using the live CD you need to be sure about sufficient permissions -> "maby adding to lp and scanner group could help"

Can you please try again and make sure the necessary permissions are set for your user?

I think permissions should be set automatically if I install package. It should work out of the box without need to correct permissions manually. If I use "adduser" command it works only if I logout and login. So how to do it with livecd environment?

Rolf Leggewie (r0lf) wrote :

of course, this should be set correctly and work out of the box. But before a fix is applied we need to really understand the whole problem and make sure it will indeed be fixed 100% with a given change.

the problem with the live CD is that once you log out the CD shuts down the computer? If so, please ask in IRC how to do what you need to do. I am sure there is a way, but I can't tell you one that I am 100% sure will work right now without testing.
