I really think this should be sorted properly. It seems like it would be fixable with a simple check. It causes all kinds of problems. Fixing it solved the following problems for me:

-Can not login via gdm.
-Cannot load firmware for ipw2200
-Mouse not working
-Cannot login via tty2
-Cannot use ssh
-Cannot use sudo
-No sound due to sound driver problems
