I ignored the message 3 times, because it was no critical for me. Then
i got bored, sent the bug report, removed Samba, installed Samba and
everything is fine now. More critical for me is disappearing of the
weather applet from panel )

Please note that Samba 4 (as its description mentions) is experimental
and not production ready. For simple file sharing, use the "samba"
package.

Sweet. I'll be honest. I'm new to Linux in general and am getting a user
end side view on it before I set up domains and such. I've never done
anything like those before, so I wanted to teach myself. I saw that 11.04
was out when I got my daily updates and I went for it. Got the error during
Samba4 and now can't seem to install anything.

How do I fix this? It's throwing up error messages every time I do an update or install something. I'm even getting error messages trying to uninstall samba. This bug crashed my machine once already. Had I known about this last night I wouldn't have upgraded yet.

Have you tried uninstalling the "samba4" package (not "samba") ?

Uninstalling samba4 worked. So should I try to install it again now? Or should I wait a while and see if someone finds out why this is happening?

Are you sure you would like to install Samba4, and not just Samba ?
Samba 4 is still experimental, and not intended for production use yet.
It's there for those who need AD DC support (which is not provided by
Samba 3) and would like to give it a try.

Please don't reply to every comment in this bug - how to uninstall Samba
4 is already explained in the bug report; this just causes more email

I don't know how or why it worked this time, but after numerous reboots and
tinkering and already trying this and giving up and trying it again:
sudo apt-get remove samba
removed samba 4. I'd like to get 3 back, but I'm a little scared and I
don't know how to get only 3 without touching Alpha 4.

This happened while I was upgrading to 11.04, which worked fine in my Kubuntu computer, but my wife's Ubuntu system crashed on this error and will no longer boot. It has lost proprietary drivers for nvidia and I have not found a way to access my wired network in order to reconfigure. I did do
sudo apt-get remove samba4
successfully, but still dead in the water due to this bug.

Please note that samba 4 IS required to successfully work with Win 7 64 - at least on my network - took months to find that out & get something working - now upgraded Ubuntu & samba fails!

I got this on an upgrade from Maverick to Natty.
I then removed samba-common and then installed samba and it seems fine now
sudo apt-get remove samba-common
sudo apt-get install samba

status: | Confirmed → Invalid |
I've had this problem way before I had updated to 11 Unity. I was trying to make my network run faster by reading some tutorials and I changed quite a few things with the terminal in configuration files and such things and when I restarted one time my network no longer worked. my own fault. But sadly reinstalling apt-get reinstall of samba does not fix it niter for samba4 purge w/e. It is also consistent over upgrades and fixes to samba over maybe the last 6 months. I personally suspect I changed a permanent configure file or something to a invalid value. I'm not desperate to get it fixed because now I just plug my other computer directly into my Music/ITunes HHD and it is faster that way anyways though not as convenient as doing it over the wireless network but I am willing to work though a solution B/C I find Samba interesting.
