Jelmer, I'm not sure that this is a duplicate of that bug, as it purports that the issue was fixed, but it is still occurring in 4.0.0~beta2+dfsg1-3.

It looks like this is a slightly different bug, which has to do with the length of the NetBIOS name.

As far as I can tell it is fixed with rc2.

I didn't want to isolate the nag altogether as to find the real culprit!
Has nothing to do with samba. All due to a zfs file system error. Has been
uninstalled. This is a new operating system I am trying to develop. Am not
a pro so have to excuse the hassle! Was run on Gnome Boxes as to isolate
the problem. Am running current OS with no hassles after zfs has been
removed!

I found two work arounds:

1: is to reprovision samba 4 which allows you to change the NetBios Domain name:

or

2: go in to the file and manually change the domain name

in my case example full domain name example.home

by the way it is Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS 64 bit on virtual box.

Remove the dashes from your hostname and hosts file, reboot and samba4 should start.
I tried to reinstall then and run into the next bug, which is a password not complex enough error.
It's pretty broken.

I found a work around on this do the following:

sudo mv /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.bak
sudo apt-get install samba4
