Mine is quite simple.

Router is 192.168.1.1.
Desktop PC using DHCP.
Server PC (running smbd) at 192.168.1.3.

My Desktop PC's network is configured using gnome network-manager.

My fstab line looks like this:
//192.168.1.3/username /home/username/smbmountpoint cifs auto,iocharset=utf8,credentials=/root/.smbcredentials 0 0
