I ran into a similar bug of the samba with the latest ubuntu 14.04 official release.

My Win7 laptop cannot connect to the Samba server, but I run the "smbpasswd -a <USER>" and it works.

it seems the "smbpasswd -a <USER>" was not persistent when I reboot the server, I have to rerun the "smbpasswd command to add user.

Ran into the same issue when trying to access a shared folder on 14.04 from a comp running 12.04. Can confirm Sunding's solution worked.

Please fix this bug asap thanks, another guy reported this too

http://askubuntu.com/questions/454269/after-upgrading-from-12-04-to-14-04-samba-has-big-issues

Workaround
- Download the lastest samba http://www.samba.org/samba/ftp/stable/samba-4.1.7.tar.gz
- Build and install your self.

This issue DOSE NOT DUPLICATE #1273447, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1273447

Not a duplicated one, I already upgraded to the lastest samba 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2

Workaround for now is install monit and add hook in it's configuration:

check process smbd with pidfile /var/run/samba/smbd.pid
        start program "/usr/sbin/service smbd start"
        stop program "/usr/sbin/service smbd stop"
if 20 restarts within 20 cycles then timeout

check process nmbd with pidfile /var/run/samba/nmbd.pid
        start program "/usr/sbin/service nmbd start"
        stop program "/usr/sbin/service nmbd stop"
if 20 restarts within 20 cycles then timeout
