I've been working on the problem, both within Ubuntu and Upstream. The problem isn't an Ubuntu problem per-se: Sabayon itself was broken upstream for non-RedHat distros. FWIW, it hasn't worked in Debian for a while either.
As an LTSP developer, I recognize that Sabayon's an important piece of software, so I'm committed to getting a working version going for Karmic. Federico just released a new version late last week, so I'll be working on getting a new version in my PPA for jaunty, if you'd like to test.
