It's early days yet, but installing "linux-backports-modules-[kernel version here]-generic" package from my package manager appears to have solved this.

I use Skype daily and prior to this was unable to carry on a conversation without the internet disconnecting partway through - now for two days running I have had no problem with this and was even able to stream live video whilst Skyping last night with no connection loss (although it didn't do the Skype call much good!).
 Like I said, early days, but thank you joshyg6.
