I had this issue when transfering a Sony Vaio laptop with a P4 processor from XP to Ubuntu. Starting Ubuntu with "noapic option solve the problem but I don't thing log file should be allowed to grow to more than 150Mo.
It is of no use and it is possible to lock the computer. Size limit should be imposed via logrotate or a message should be displayed to the user before it is too late to do anything about it and not beeing able to boot the PC.
