Thank you.

Okay, I looked at the picture. My computer tower has only the USB ports, on the front, directly under the CD slot, one other similar slot which seems to be for "recordable CD's" and another, 2/3 size (narrower, too small for a CD) slot whose use is a mystery to me.

On the right hand of the mystery slot are two USB posts, oriented vertically. I inserted the thumb drive finally, after realizing I had to remove the cover. I had never seen one before I purchased this, so I didn't know it had to come apart, to get at the part to insert. I'm embarrassed to admit I had no idea how to get at the business part, but wanting to try to follow your request, I checked to see if it would come apart, and viola'! Then it made sense, and I inserted it, after flipping it several times, since it seemed as though it should go further, but apparently it was inserted far enough, because, surprise!

A small window appeared, as if by magic, the way CD's use to get a response on the screen, and it says, "3BF8-0A57 - File Browser." I don't actually have any idea how to put anything onto it, but what you wanted, I think, was to know if there was a response, and I suspect this is what's supposed to happen, right? It lists the item as "1 GB fil..." meaning file, I presume. I then clicked on it once, and it showed in the display, if that's the right word, by which I mean the otherwise blank space that icons or lists turn up in when you want to see what's in an item from the left hand menu, and it showed as four separate things, folders actually in icon view. I don't know what they mean, but they're labeled: "cdrom," "cdrom0," "floppy," and "floppy0" whatever those mean?

Does this enlighten us (you) as to what might be wrong with the CD relationship or connection to the monitor or to the Rhythmbox?

The listing I mentioned first, in the left hand menu as "3BF8-0A57 - File Brower" disappeared from the left hand list when I clicked it, and it displayed as the four folders I mentioned. I tried to get it back, but failed, getting a message that it couldn't be retrieved, and was maybe deleted, or something like that. My problem now is that I don't know how to remove the thumb drive. Can you give me a hint? I tried the browser, but it didn't say anything about removing it. I ask because I'm worried about just pulling it off, but if that's what one is supposed to do, you might want to tell me. Otherwise, I'll probably have to just leave it there until I know if it's safe to take off without doing anything first. I mention this because I overheard someone once say something about having to do something, to remove it, but I don't remember the details.

I apologize for taking up so much of your time. I really appreciate your help and your kindness.

Sincerely,

Doris

> When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected to allow it to run, I am rather new at this stuff. It took all afternoon last Sunday, a week ago, and since then I have encountered several unfamiliar problems. The most disturbing is that the Rhythmbox no longer contains, in the side pane, the option "Unknown" which I was able to play my inserted CD's by clicking, once I had inserted one in the computer mechanism for that. At that time, the computer monitor would also display a small window telling me that it had noticed that I had inserted a CD and asking if I wished to use Rhythmbox to listen to it. I would then click "okay" and it would disappear that window and open Rhythmbox. At first I didn't know what to do, and it took some trial and error to figure out, but I found that if I clicked on "Unknown" the computer would oblige my wish to listen to the CD by listing all of the tracks and that then when I clicked on "Play" it would oblige me even further by doing so. I was very happy to discover how to do this, but now there is no item "Unknown" listed, and therefore, having tried everything I can find to click on, and to no avail, I am at my wits end, as I cannot listen to my CD's at all. HELP! please?

I tried to figure out what is wanted for information, but most of what I've read is beyond my vocabulary, computer-wise, which is limited still. I am trying, but much is assumed, and it is hard to figure out where to learn it from. Please try to help me get my CD's to play.
