Doris, let's take this one item at a time...

Don't worry about another type of CD. We can figure stuff out in other ways.

As for the USB thumb drive, it will work with Linux. There are two common reasons why the thumb drive did not insert into the port. The most common is that it is upside-down. Hold the thumb drive like you would a playing card, and imagine that you are looking at the face of the card. Try to then insert the drive into the USB port. If it doesn't seem to fit, flip the thumb drive in the same way you would if you wanted to see the back of the playing card, and try to insert it again. The other common mistake is confusing the similar USB port and the Firewire port.

There are 4 usb ports in a group, and then a firewire port (angled vertically) next to those 4 usb ports.
