Oh. phooey. I don't think I have anything else. Except for the audio stuff, which I got from the library, all I have is the language DVD that a friend from Quebec mailed to me. I live up on a mountain, and it's hard to get out, the nearest "shopping" is an hour's drive each way, though at least the library is close, but there's only that and the post office, about a 10 minute drive, when the roads are passable.

What sort of thing would a "program" CD be for? I did buy a 1 GB thumb drive, I think that's the right term, but I haven't tried it yet, because the man at the shop in Vernon said he didn't know if it would work with the Linux system. I could try that, if that's the sort of thing you mean. I think it goes into the "USB port" if I've got the term right. It's not a CD, just a little thing for memory storage (back up).

Make and model...the computer tower says "COMPAQ Presario" on the front. How would a person find out the model of the CD/DVD drive? It worked fine before the upgrade, so you can understand, as a neophyte, how I am kicking myself for allowing the upgrade, not realizing the possible outcome!

a little later...I hunted up the thingie, it's called a Silicon Power, 1 GB Go, LuxMini 710, and I see in the fine print that it says it works with Windows Vista, and I did try to insert it, but it doesn't even seem to fit into my computer's USB port, so I think I will have to return it. It's the only kind they had in Vernon, that I could find, so perhaps I am out of luck as far as trying to find something for memory back up, so as not to lose my information I have stored on my computer, if something goes wrong.

Anyway, is there anything else I can do to help find out what is wrong, why the computer can't seem to communicate with (or by?) Ubuntu about the CD's, etc.? I just can't understand why it was fine before, and as soon as the upgrade was done, the function just stopped working, totally.

Thank you for any help you can suggest to fix this. I could as my librarian if they have any non-audio things I could borrow to try, if that would really help you figure this out.

Doris

> When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected to allow it to run, I am rather new at this stuff. It took all afternoon last Sunday, a week ago, and since then I have encountered several unfamiliar problems. The most disturbing is that the Rhythmbox no longer contains, in the side pane, the option "Unknown" which I was able to play my inserted CD's by clicking, once I had inserted one in the computer mechanism for that. At that time, the computer monitor would also display a small window telling me that it had noticed that I had inserted a CD and asking if I wished to use Rhythmbox to listen to it. I would then click "okay" and it would disappear that window and open Rhythmbox. At first I didn't know what to do, and it took some trial and error to figure out, but I found that if I clicked on "Unknown" the computer would oblige my wish to listen to the CD by listing all of the tracks and that then when I clicked on "Play" it would oblige me even further by doing so. I was very happy to discover how to do this, but now there is no item "Unknown" listed, and therefore, having tried everything I can find to click on, and to no avail, I am at my wits end, as I cannot listen to my CD's at all. HELP! please?

I tried to figure out what is wanted for information, but most of what I've read is beyond my vocabulary, computer-wise, which is limited still. I am trying, but much is assumed, and it is hard to figure out where to learn it from. Please try to help me get my CD's to play.
