Thank you so much for responding!

I'm sorry, about not being more clear in my report about what happens, compared to what I expected to happen, based on what happened before.

The thing is, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing at all. It makes no difference if I insert the CD when the internet connection is on or off, whether I have tabs opened, or whether the desktop is just sitting there empty. It also made no difference if I opened the Rhythmbox through the applications menu first, or after inserting the CD.

To describe it intuitively, it's as though the connection between the computer tower, where I insert the CD, and the display monitor, screen, Rhythmbox, etc., were completely severed. As soon as I would put a CD in, before, immediately there was a response, and now there is simply no response whatsoever. I am baffled!

I will try to take a screenshot, and attach it, if that is what you are asking?

Okay, I took the screenshot, and it shows the Rhythmbox on the Desktop, after the CD was inserted, but the inserting didn't bring up the tracks or anything, like it used to, after I clicked on "Unknown" as I said many times~sorry, but it's disconcerting not to have it there. To get the Rhythmbox at all, now I have to go to the applications menu and click on it. Before it responded when I answered the little window asking me if I wanted to use it to play the CD which it told me it had noticed that I had just inserted. Then the Rhythmbox appeared on its own, and all I had to do was click "Unknown" and all the tracks appeared in the right place and it played when I clicked on "Play." If there's something I'm supposed to do differently now, that I don't know about, please tell me! I looked through all of the information in the current Rhythmbox, and it definitely says it's supposed to play inserted CD's, but it absolutely doesn't have anything I can find to tell it to go ahead and do that.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Doris

> When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected to allow it to run, I am rather new at this stuff. It took all afternoon last Sunday, a week ago, and since then I have encountered several unfamiliar problems. The most disturbing is that the Rhythmbox no longer contains, in the side pane, the option "Unknown" which I was able to play my inserted CD's by clicking, once I had inserted one in the computer mechanism for that. At that time, the computer monitor would also display a small window telling me that it had noticed that I had inserted a CD and asking if I wished to use Rhythmbox to listen to it. I would then click "okay" and it would disappear that window and open Rhythmbox. At first I didn't know what to do, and it took some trial and error to figure out, but I found that if I clicked on "Unknown" the computer would oblige my wish to listen to the CD by listing all of the tracks and that then when I clicked on "Play" it would oblige me even further by doing so. I was very happy to discover how to do this, but now there is no item "Unknown" listed, and therefore, having tried everything I can find to click on, and to no avail, I am at my wits end, as I cannot listen to my CD's at all. HELP! please?

I tried to figure out what is wanted for information, but most of what I've read is beyond my vocabulary, computer-wise, which is limited still. I am trying, but much is assumed, and it is hard to figure out where to learn it from. Please try to help me get my CD's to play.
