Rhythmbox may be reporting that error because that is the fork that application has taken.
You might want to run Rhythm box from a terminal to see if anything interesting is listed.
you can also run it from the terminal with the following command:
rhythmbox -d
Which will produce a lot of output... that might help narrow things down.

I am making a 'leap' to Samba / XP Share issue because of the fact that the same music working when you move the file locally. IMHO that eliminates the codecs. It may still be a Rhythmbox issue, but it would be with the share more than the codec involved in playing the file.
