Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a way to disable these notifications by clicking on the status icon? But this seems to have gone lost during the recent changes in lucid.

The option to switch them off is still available in gconf-editor by going to /apps/rhythmbox/plugins/status-icon/notification-mode
