I take a bit of my previous comment back. If I use Kvpnc as my VPN front end I don't run into the lockup problems. I'm disappointed that network manager VPN front end doesn't seem to be setting this up correctly. Now I'll put money behind getting the network manager VPN front end fixed so I don't have to kludge around it like this.
