I followed your suggestion. From a terminal window session (Gnome was not able start), I did:

sudo apt-get remove rarian-compat #just in case
sudo apt-get install scrollkeeper
update-manager -d
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install rarian-compat

Seems to have worked. As an extra bonus, 8.10 solved the NVIDIA problem I had with 8.04
