The short summary is: Both Mir and Unity8 developers have got hold of Pineview hardware and can now reproduce the bug. We have established it's a start-up failure in Unity8-dash only.
Unity8 does start on Pineview, but you have to wait a very long time for it to start (during which you see a black screen). If we don't have a bug for that start-up time issue then I'll log one soon. Even powerful desktops take a very long time to start Unity8.
