I have the same (or very similar) problem on a fresh 16.04 install (same problem on 15.10 upgraded to 16.04, but I reinstalled to be sure).
Dell Latitude E4300
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Subsystem: Dell Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Subsystem: Dell Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
If I login with unity 8, I just get a black screen. Interestingly, sometimes I get a partially rendered desktop - however, I cannot get the launcher to work, switching windows doesn't work, and in general interacting with it is impossible. Another odd thing is that if I do this, after I login on lightdm, I am presented a different login screen - the password text field isn't properly aligned either which is odd.
