Once we arrive to the converged world where desktop Ubuntu will support .click packaged applications the "Build and validate click package" will be enabled even for Desktop target.

The package creation is target specific. If the target is i386 emulator then the i386 chroot is used for package build, for an armhf device obviously the armhf click chroot is used for package creation.

So the target selection is a very important step in Running-Building-Packaging a project. Publishing I would consider as the last step of the application development. I would expect the developers to first get familiar with the Run function and that should put the developer on track about the importance of the selected target.

But I am open for suggestion where and in what form should the IDE tell that "this button is disabled because you have selected a target what does not yet support the .click package format"

Also, I would forward this bug to the relevant system component what is responsible to provide click support on desktop.
