Since it appears that the problem is not my Xubuntu software setup (see post #33), I thought that maybe it is my hardware setup, which is rather old. So here is my hardware setup for you to consider:

Dell Inspiron 518 desktop (2008?)
Dell DG33M04/Foxconn G33M Motherboard
Intel G33 + ICH9 chipset
8GB memory
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU (replaced original E7300 - no VT-x)
