Thanks for the great bug report, Sam. Confirmed, it didn't take long to lock up on my lucid laptop either.
kvm itself doesn't crash - you can hit ctrl-alt-2 to go to the monitor, and type 'sendkey alt-sysrq-b' to reboot the vm for instance.
