nicksaid plugin shows an icon to access nicksaid on the scape in menu bar.
Ubuntu uses appmenu by default and pidgin windows does not have menu bar, there is no way to access nicksaid.
WORKAROUND:
use `UBUNTU_MENUPROXY='' pidgin` not to use appmenu.
