Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 AMD64, running Unity 2D
--

Problem:
I went to sound settings, and played around with the general volume slider and the one for the sound effects, sometimes using the volume keys on my laptop. Then suddenly the sound stopped working.

What I did before I ran ubuntu-bug:
pidof pulseaudio (it was still running)
killall pulseaudio
pidof pulseaudio (it was again, still running (didn't check whether the PID was the same, but I'd assume it wasn't)

The first test tone in ubuntu-bug played, the second one didn't.

And my sound is, once again, gone... I think it might have happened with the latest updates I installed, as I didn't have this problem in the afternoon. I didn't play with the volume controls this time btw. Neither do I know whether this happened an hour ago, or just now when Empathy should have made a sound. All I know is that it's a rather annoying bug.

Now all I got where the drums at the login screen. After that nothing would play sound anymore. Once again, pulseaudio is still running.

The same happened on a different computer today. No sound at all, without doing anything special. No indication of something being wrong software-wise, but simply no sound coming out of the speakers. Neither does there come any sound out of my earbuds if I plug them in.

Some extra information:
Once the sound disappears, you're screwed. You can reboot and kill Pulseaudio all you want, but it won't come back.

I think I might be on to something here...
If I open the Sound settings panel, no sound device is selected, but the sound is working. The sound stops working from the moment I select one. That's why I can't undo it, because there's no way to "unselect" the only item in the list.

I found a temporary fix!
sudo apt-get install pavucontrol, open it, go to the configration tab, and choose "Analog Stereo Duplex".

good solution Robin, it's working.
In the Ubuntu Software center, you can search for PulseAudio Volume..... enable the source regarding if it is done or not and install.
