Bug Description

If I open up pavucontrol and click the 'Input Devices' tab, then plug in my Logitech Quickcam 3000, I see the microphone input bar bouncing around while I talk. It continues to bounce around for about 5 seconds--then it freezes wherever it was on the scale and I am unable to record audio from the webcam. (If I shout and max out the input, the bar will freeze near the right side of the screen, if I am quiet, it will freeze near the left side).

I can repeatedly unplug the webcam and then plug it back in and repeat the steps with the same results. It also happens if I kill the process '/usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog'.

If I am extremely quick during those five seconds, I can get cheese up and running and record about half a second of sound before it doesn't record any more.

The video for the camera also flickers and the color is off--so I'm not entirely sure it's specifically a pulseaudio issue. The camera works fine under Windows, so I don't believe this is a hardware issue.

This bug resurfaced for me recently, not sure why.

Similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/843431

Workaround at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/843431/comments/93 seems to solve for the moment:

Just writing to confirm that sordna's workaround works. For anyone looking to apply it:

- $ sudo nano /etc/default/grub
- Find the line that begins with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and append usbcore.autosuspend=-1 to tell the system to never autosuspend USB devices. Note that, within the quotes, this field is space-separated. My line now reads:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash usbcore.autosuspend=-1"
- Save your updated grub file (using nano, CTRL+O and then ENTER to confirm the change).
- Exit your text editor (using nano, CTRL+X).
- $ sudo update-grub
