@Daniel, perhaps it is...I'll get the log for you (can't reboot at the moment, trying to get some work done). However, it's the EXACT same issue that has been described by others here who have provided verbose logs and for whom, so far as I can tell, there has been no explanation other than the one provided by Igor that it is HAL which may be defective by design. To wit, the first user to log in sees the audio device under Hardware in Sound Preferences; any other user who subsequently logs in while the first user is still logged in sees no hardware device for audio, and thus there is no sound for those users. If the first user logs out, the audio device is freed up and can be grabbed by another user when "switched" to. One of two things *should* be taking place and isn't: either the audio device should be freed up when a user switch occurs, or the audio device should be always available to all users. The current behaviour where it seems the first user gets an exclusive lock on the device is not correct.
