adding some more info =>upgraded from maintained 9.04to 9.10 386i via update manager and upgraded afterwards to UbuntuStudio 9.10, another issue is that the System is not booting when my printer(USB MP220) is connected.
Is there something wrong with the new device manager or GRUB2.
I can boot without having the printer connected. I fear here that Grub is trying to boot from the printer :-)
The printer have a multi card reader an have also ports for a storage device like, USB,MS,SD,etc;
At boot Ubuntu is loading during the bootsequence the the bootstab from the HDD twice:
code booting from HDA 0,5 etc, etc,
In oder to get the sound my workarround is currently for your session the steps are:
1. Open you terminal and type $ sudo alsa force-reload and hit Enter
Enter your login password and hit Enter
( Alsa will now turn of the devices and restart)
2.Go than to the Gnome Alsa Mixer (Aplications=
Please uncheck the box for the Master Volume and pull up the volume level
3.At the upper taskbar click on the speaker icon to adjust the volume.
Test now if the sound works for you too.
UDEV is might involved indeed since it causes boot issues with some USB devices,
I need here a hint to locate the files to check in which order they are loaded.
