I already checked all possible mixer elements' positions and muting / unmuting. No change.
I now kicked pulseaudio out of my system, so I cannot answer any further questions.
As you can see above, this is a problem not only on MacBook Pros.
Personally, I do not understand why Ubuntu's developers ruin people's systems. I was under the impression that Ubuntu 8.10 was neither alpha nor beta but a final version.
