kripkenstein,

That's probably because you didn't install the "linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-17-generic" package manually. The "linux-generic" metapackage usually gets uploaded after all packages are built and ready (including the restricted-modules). I don't think everything is ready yet, so you need either to manually install packages or just wait.

Daniel,

Previously I suggested to change the sample rate to 48000Hz (the native rate of my card), and despite using less CPU it seems to cause very slight stutters in VLC when playing an audio stream of 41000Hz. Leaving it at the default rate seems to eliminate stutters completely* for me in all applications, when I add my user to pulse-access and pulse-rt (shouldn't this be made the default behaviour>) and have the following set in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:

high-priority = yes
default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 5

*I'm sure these settings are heavily card-dependent. This is mine:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

A few days ago I posted on Ubuntu Forums replying to a post on stuttering audio, and suggested a modified daemon.conf (different to above, but still lower than the default). Some have noticed the problem reduce, disappear or get worse. See here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766860

I would suggest that we do some extensive testing and figure out how to get this problem resolved for everyone.
