Bug Description

After upgrading from 19.04 to 20.04 sound did not work. "Analog Stereo" and "Build-in speaker" appears "unplugged/unavaiable". I can change it in volume control -> configuration to Analog Stereo Duplex (unplugged)(unavaiable) and sound does play, but after each reboot computer changes to Digital Stereo IEC985 and do not play sound until changed again.
I did reinstall of alsa and pulse according to some forums but this didn't work.
Before upgrade everything always worked out of the box since 2009 on this computer. I know it's a little old but it works excellent! Please help.

I have the same problem. However, I'm able to record audio (with internal mic) using audacity. Also, plugged in microphone/phones work ok.

This is the second time I've seen this issue reported against XFCE recently but I can't find the other report right now. Please try:

1. Log out.

2. Ctrl+Alt+F4 and log into the text console.

3. rm -rf .config/pulse

4. Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in again.

Has that fixed it?

That worked for me, thanks! However, internal microphone still appears as "unplugged" in pavucontrol.

This did not help for me. I still need to change pulse configuration to "Analog Stereo Duplex (unplugged)(unavailable)" every boot to have sound.

Will reinstall of 20.04 help or should I go back to 19?

So, I've tried. Reinstalling did not help. Also, problem is even worse on kubuntu i've tried. There is no option "Analog Stereo Duplex (unplugged)(unavailable)" to choose and turn on sound.

I have a Dell XPS L501X with exactly the same problem. The fix above:

I the only thing that has worked for me.

I've tried multiple other suggestions on other sites, include renaming .config/pulse folder then reboot, force-reload of alsa, removing the pulse-audio and alsa-base packages from the system, and reinstalling them, and reviewing all settings in alsa mixer.

Ubuntu works perfectly on this laptop. I had 19.04 previously, and sound worked fine. An upgrade to 20.04 didn't work as selecting the nVidia video driver nvidia-driver-390 would not let the OS boot into the GUI. What is strange is a complete wipe and reinstall of 20.04 from scratch worked fine, and that video driver was selected automatically.

I'm so glad I found this post, as I now have sound again. For now I'm content changing the setting by hand after a reboot.

After today's upgrade:
pulseaudio/focal-updates,focal-security,now 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 amd64 [installed]

Sound stopped completely: "Establishing connection to pulseaudio. Please wait" - goes forever.

How can I downgrade to pulseaudio-module-bluetooth_13.99.1-1ubuntu3?
# sudo apt install pulseaudio=13.99.1-lubuntu3
This says Version '13.99.1-lubuntu3' for 'pulseaudio' was not found" despite this:
Listing... Done
pulseaudio/focal-updates,focal-security 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 amd64
pulseaudio/focal 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3 amd64

Thanks for the bug report. The regression in pulseaudio update 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.2 (particularly on some Dells) is already covered by bug 1878327 and bug 1876065 so we should use those.
