This bug has already been fixed in intrepid. To get that fix into hardy as well the following packages needs to be backported by someone:alsa-lib, alsa-plugins, and flashplugin-nonfree.
There is also several workarounds to this bug (which is partly why is marked as lower priority). For instance, try to disable "sound mixing" under System::Preferences::Sound and if that doesn't work, uninstall the pulseaudio package (if your audio worked fine before pulseaudio was added this is likely to work).
