OK, thx, I also raised a question https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-settings/+question/285197 (but may have posted into the wrong place) asking if there's any apps or methods of changing the volumes independently as on Android as I hadn't found anything when searching the web, however there were no suggestions given.
Wonder if you could share some light - at present if this happens again is the only way forwards to delete the file again. As with any issue, it isn't a solution but a usable workaround currently.
