Bug Description

I tested kernel 3.6.0-030600rc6-generic on my Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and since then sound is crippled (sample attached). Even the login sound is crippled (so this is not limited to the sample done with Skype).

In kernel 3.4 everything still fine.

Can you retest with kernel 3.6 which is out now? Do you compile the kernel yourself?

Hi Thomas,

no, I am not compiling the kernel on my own, I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with the prepared quantal-Kernel.

I tried the new kernel now with interesting results:
Sound is still crippled, but a little less than before maybe. However, as soon as I start sound recorder and hit the record button to get a demo for you, the sound suddenly is ok.

Something, that sound recorder does when you hit record, heals it. Very strange.

Hi, another test done on kernel 3.5.5-030505-generic #201210021510 SMP
Tue Oct 2 19:11:42 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. That
kernel does not have the issue with crippled sound.

HTH, Martin.

Oh by the way: Yes, my laptop supports a docking station - I have seen this a a question above. Not sure if i have tested with attached to the docking station for the first tests, but recent tests were made without the docking station.

It looks like the second option did the trick:
    Turning off PulseAudio timer scheduling
If your problem is specific to PulseAudio, you could as a last resort,
try to turn off PulseAudio's timer scheduling.
Note that this might consume slightly more power.

To change this, edit the file /etc/pulse/default.pa and change the
line that says:

        load-module module-udev-detect
    to
        load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

But why wasn't that needed on kernel versions <=3.4?

Best regards, Martin.

Funtoo Linux 3.6.0 here.

I found the
     load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
setting somewhere in the ArchLinux wiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#Glitches.2C_skips_or_crackling

So i added tsched=0, did not help, made it even worse.

Then I additionally changed
     default-fragments = 8
     default-fragment-size-msec = 5

and recompiled my kernel to 300 Hz (was 1000Hz before)

after playing arround with alsamixer as root,
_removing_ tsched=0 again,
setting default-sample-rate = 44100 (was 48000)
and killing pulseaudio, the sound was perfect again. Not really sure why.

Motherboard: GA-MA790FXT-UD5P, Audio: AMD nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

I cannot change the default-sample-rate without compiling the kernel, right?
No /etc/.... config for that, right?

Best Regards, Martin.
