I have this exact same problem. I have definitively narrowed it down to powernowd: I have configured it to not start in the regular bootup sequence, but when issuing a direct

/etc/init.d/powernowd start

it crashes the box.

Hardware is an Asus A8N motherboard with an Nvidia nforce4 chipset.

I can provide any information you might ask for to help debug this. I'm a strong techie, but more or less a zero when it comes to the kernel. I once typed the kernel debug trap keystroke combination by mistake. That was fun.
