Sorry to take so long to reply, I thought I had some how stuffed up the config so I used Synaptic to do a complete removal including config files and reinstall to hopefully start again - which got me nowhere, so I gave up.
I started a fresh install on a different box and followed some instructions I found via QGIS for setting up postgres for QGIS and it worked on the other machine, so I just gave up on this one.
I don't know if the above is any use to you or not as I have now un-installed the postgresql server packages. Note that I had originally installed the postgis geographic location extentions package to create a database for QGIS, if that makes any difference.
