Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

1) Ubuntu 8.04.1

2) ii evince 2.22.2-0ubuntu Document (postscript, pdf) viewer

3) I drag my mouse over text and I think it should only highlight what I've dragged over.

4) Evince actually highlights parts of previous portions of text, many times including the bullet on the same line, parts of the line from a different column, or other pieces of text.

Date: Mon Nov 10 16:11:07 2008
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04

Package: evince 2.22.2-0ubuntu2
PackageArchitecture: i386

 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: evince

Agree, we have a lot of problems with selection in multicolumn documents and
even crashes.

And I can even reproduce "unexpected async reply" X crash with the document above.

In the attachment you should note that two of the bullets are highlighted (as seen different from a bullet above) and it should look fairly clear that the neither of the bullets should be highlighted but only the text should.

As per request, a PDF that has issues with highlighting. Try selecting part of a bulleted line without selecting the bullet. The first bullet item on the second page always shows the problem for me.

Thanks Pedro and everyone working on this otherwise great program.

I believe this bug and bug 3188 have a common cause. I've posted a patch there which seems to fix the problem, but needs better testing. Hopefully some of the cc list here are interested?

I also have this problem using all libpoppler-based pdf-viewers. But it's not only with muti-colun text, but also with vertical-oriented text and upper or lower indexes. When i try to select a word on a line, which contain these symbols, they are become selected to. It often happens whith indexes in other columns.

I confirm that selection still behaves strangely on some pdf file, especially with multiple columns.
I use evince 3.14.1 and poppler 0.26.5 on debian jessie.
I attach again one file attached to gnome bug #325189 because it is a good test case.
