Do you run with desktop effects enabled (i.e. does this happen with compiz or metacity)?

I'm running compiz. It seems the problem has gone away, I didn't see it happen in a while. The authentication window now opens in foreground, although it sometimes isn't focused when it comes up.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Run the update manger,
2. Click somewhere outside the window to make it inactive,
3. While inactive click on the "Check" button.

What happens: the auth dialog pops up (in "always on top" mode) without gaining focus while the update manager window gets active. Sounds like a focus race which definitely should be won by the auth dialog.

I reported this against update-manager at first (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/449594 - now marked invalid) but on a second thought this bug report seems to be a better place.
