Bug Description

Suspend (due to inactivity), by closing the laptop lid, or by manually selecting suspend does suspend correctly, but gets the error "Resume Failure: Press any key to continue" when waking up. The machine will then reboot.

This problem did exist intermittently on 9.10 and earlier systems. Since 10.04 it has not been a problem. 11.10 has been particularly good with no suspend issues at all.

Hardware details:

Machine: Toshiba Tecra A8, with CoreDuo (Genuine Intel® CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz × 2)

lspci entries related to graphics driver:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Just did an "upgrade" from 11.10 to 12.04 and the problem came about immediately. 32 bit install. All updated applied (dist-upgrade)

pm-utils version installed: 1.4.1-9

I was recommended to submit this bug on pm-utils. I was also told that I may want to mark it as kernel related, but am unsure how to do that.

I have referenced the following bug on resume from suspend issues:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/962142

but the problem seems slightly different (the other bug does not mention the display indicating the "resume failure" message).

Update: I had done some testing and added i965.modeset=1 to grub. After a restart, it had the same issues. After a second restart, it would then suspend and resume correctly. To try and confirm, I then removed the i965.modeset=1 from grub. After a restart, the suspend and resume continued to work correctly.

So, now I am in the unfortunate situation of not having the problem but not knowing what has solved it! I had done a restart before after doing all updates and it still had the problem. Anyway, I will report back if the problem re-arises.

Update: I have this issue on a Toshiba Sat Pro L500 1LZ testing 12.04 beta. Basically after suspending the laptop it seems to randomly decide to not resume. I am using the the 64bit version.

Update: When coming out of resume it seems to just sit there with either a black screen or just my wallpaper. it should show the unlock password dialog or login if suspended from login screen.

The problem still randomly exists (again, I am back to what I *think* is stock Ubuntu: got rid of any grub adjustments I had tried).

I should note I have disabled the "screen lock" so I don't get prompted for a password on resume.

So far this is an intermittent issue and very hard to determine what happens as it is definitely not consistent (at least in my awareness).

I get the same issue. It did work for a while but after a recent update stopped.

On resume from standby the system hangs on a black screen, I have to do a hard reset to fix.

I am using the Nvidia drivers, could this have something to do with it? Nvidia seems to cause loads of issues...

pst007x,

The system that I originally reported this issue with does NOT have Nvidia Graphics. Rather, it has Intel, as noted.

Also, my system does NOT hang with a completely black screen, but rather with the message "Resume Failure: Press any key to continue" listed on the screen.

So, we may have similar but not identical issues.

Regarding the possibility of a duplicate of bug 966744, I don't think so but I could be wrong.

I have one laptop (the Toshiba Tecra A9 from the original report) that has the problem mentioned here: namely that every time it hangs it gives me the "Resume failure" message. I have not had any hangs with either a "fully blank screen" or the screen before the suspend (both with a moving cursor) mentioned on the bug report to 966744. Unfortunately I am traveling and won't be back to this laptop for further testing for a few months.

I do have another laptop (a Toshiba Tecra M10) that does "randomly and infrequently" display the issues listed in 966744 (I have this laptop currently with me), but this laptop has NEVER had the "Resume Failure" message as described in this bug report. So, I feel that these are 2 separate issues (a single machine that I know of does NOT have both problems).

summary: - 12.04: Resume From Suspend Failure
+ 12.04: "Resume Failure: Press any key to continue" from suspend

@penalvch Sorry but I no longer have access to the Toshiba Tecra A8 and Toshiba Tecra M10 laptops that had these issues. As there are others on this list that had "me too" comments I won't close the bug now, but maybe you would want to. I will leave it to you.

I am helping an individual remotely that has 3 of these Toshiba Tecra A9 laptops, all with Ubuntu 12.04.5, and all having the "resume from suspend failure" described here. So I am re-opening the bug as we have access to someone that can help to give more information.
