Installing the "pm-utils" package--which for some reason wasn't installed on a fresh install of Ubuntu 17.04--fixed it, along with altering my /etc/systemd/logind.conf did the trick. I altered it to read:

HandleSuspendKey=suspend
HandleHibernateKey=suspend
HandleLidSwitch=suspend
HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend

And now everything works.
