@ilf: I would suggest a bit less sarcasm and a bit more encouragement for hard-working volunteer programmers!
Is it possible that some other process is receiving the keyboard inputs and echoing them back? I'm thinking this because typing in a password for the swap partition only echoes *s -- but later inputs will trigger the echoing of the actual characters.
