One more thing: the Lenovo W500 I am using has two GPUs: an Intel built-in one and an ATi FireGL 5700 Mobile, which is basically a Radeon 3650 with a different BIOS and 512 MB of graphics memory. Since plymouth is a graphical bootloader, I suspect it has sth to do with the graphics. In this case, I was using just the ATi, the Intel graphics were disabled in system BIOS. Driver is fglrx (as can be seen in attached dumps somewhere).
