I could verify that the Debian fix works for Debian "testing" with and without plymouth splash screen.

Unfortunately the Debian fix is not yet implemented in the Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) Daily Build at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ as of today.
