Additional notes: running 'stop gdm; plymouthd; plymouth show-splash' works fine.

Also, all I need to do for the system to boot properly is to get in the grub menu, modify anything on the kernel line (e.g. just added only one space at the end) and it worked fine. If I boot straight using the menu item, it just hangs.
