This Problem persists when using 14.04 Trusty with linux-image-generic-lts-wily for Hardware Support.
It helped to edit /etc/default/grub as follows:
removing the >quiet splash< ... what resulted to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomdmonddf nomdmonisw net.ifnames=0"
and adding the following line: GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text
after that I didn't have a splash but users where able to input their password.
