Workaround. I made up a /etc/grub.d/06_custom copying the /boot/grub/grub.cfg entry for "Ubuntu" omitting the word "splash" boots O.K.
Fine for me, not so good if anyone else has an Acer Aspire 5253 installing amd64 12.10
Note, using "Advanced Options" boots to a horrible offset slow 1024x768 screen and Systems settings > displays will not give me the choice of 1366x768
