I am also having this bug with Pidgin 2.10.6 (libpurple 2.10.6). gdb gives me the following:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x00007ffff56bae8c in g_type_check_instance_cast ()
   from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0
